Two months before my wedding I hit my breaking point. I was the heaviest I'd ever been. What should have been the "most important" weight loss year of my life went exactly opposite of how I had hoped, and I couldn't take how I was feeling anymore. The urge to binge food was overwhelming and consumed my thoughts all day, every day. I knew this couldn't be normal… I knew I had a problem. A Google search for "eating disorder doctors near me" brought me to the life changing phone call of finally asking for help.
I was diagnosed with Low Thresh Bulimia. Low thresh simply meant that I didn't always purge after my binges. A year or two of therapy later, I had come a long way in how I viewed food and my body. My doctor cleared me to attempt weight loss again.
I had temporary success with calorie counting, but eventually my weight loss reversed when I could no longer take weighing and measuring every single bite of food.
That's when another Google search changed my life once again. Because that's when I found MyBodyTutor.
I set out guidelines right away that I would not cut out any foods or food groups since that only leads to binging for me. So, we kept all the foods (chocolate, pizza, pasta, all of it)! We simply focused on adding more nutrients, using the fullness scale, and getting consistently active. My tutor let me be the leader of my health journey but she was right there beside me every step of the way to help me when I faltered.
Trust me when I say I faltered a lot. It is so scary being honest with someone else about what you truly eat, and on my most "imperfect" days when I was waiting for the whiplash of judgement, it never came. No judgement. Not even once. Just a big virtual hug and a reminder that it is A-okay to not be "perfect". We were never striving for perfection, just progress, and my tutor truly proved that to be true.
I FINALLY have a normal relationship with food, and for years now that is all I have wanted. I didn't care if I fit into a certain size of clothes or hit a specific number on the scale. I just wanted food to be easy and not consume all my thoughts, every minute of every day!
I used to think food freedom meant eating whatever food I wanted, in whatever quantity I wanted, whenever I wanted. But that wasn't freedom at all. I was a slave to food. When cravings called out to me it felt like I HAD to surrender to the craving. Now I know what true food freedom is. It's being in control of food and not the other way around.
I believe most people generally know
to lose weight. The trouble is actually making ourselves do it day in and day out. There were so many times I would have given up if I was trying to do this on my own, but on those days, my tutor was always there to keep me going. I don't know if I can ever put into words how much my tutor has meant to me, or how much this program has changed my life.
I lost 45 pounds but what I've gained is so much more meaningful. I have gained trust in my body; my body will always tell me what it needs if I am willing to listen. I've gained the confidence of knowing I CAN do it! I

stop eating when I'm satisfied. But most importantly, I gained self-forgiveness and flexibility. It's absolutely okay to have "imperfect" days. As my tutor would say "we need the bumps in the road to show us what we're made of". I found out I'm made of some pretty tough sh…..stuff, and I would bet you are too.

It's fascinating when we start to notice our own behavior. Typically, we distance ourselves from that person. We find something they have that we don't. We make them into something other than an ordinary, regular person. Then, we create an excuse for why we can't achieve the same level of success.
The most important thing to realize: Whatever anyone else has done or become, you can do or become as well, with the right support, guidance and accountability.
